Alpaca Information
Alpacas are members of the camelid family which are raised for their luxurious fleece. They originated in the mountains of Peru, Bolivia and Chili.
There are 2 types of alpacas, Huacaya and Suri. Huacayas are fluffy and Suris have long fleece that hangs in pencil locks.
The first alpacas were imported into the United States in the mid-1980s. Since 1998, alpacas can no longer be imported into the US.
Alpacas live 20-25 years. An average alpaca stands approximately 36” tall and weighs between 100–200 lb.
Female alpacas generally have one baby (called a cria) per year. Twins are extremely uncommon.
Alpacas are timid yet curious, intelligent and friendly animals. They are herd animals, and need the companionship of other alpacas.
Alpaca fleece is extremely soft, often compared to cashmere. It is three times warmer than wool, so alpaca garments can be lighter and less bulky. Alpaca is also stronger than wool, making long lasting, luxurious garments, which provide good value for your clothing dollar.
Alpaca fleece is hypoallergenic and is not itchy like wool.
Alpaca is water resistant and naturally flame retardant. Alpaca pills less than wool and wrinkles less than most other fibers.
Alpaca garments are easy to clean by hand washing in cool water and a mild soap.
